The United States goes to the polls in a country increasingly at odds with itself. The 2026 midterms will determine who controls Congress, but beneath the horse race lies a bigger question: can the American political system still translate a divided country into a functioning democracy? Mark Leibovich, staff writer at The Atlantic and author of Thank You for Your Servitude, joins moderator Sean Cotter-Lem to examine the forces reshaping American politics, from the mood of the electorate to the changing nature of power. A house divided against itself cannot stand. What will the midterms reveal about whether this one still can?

Soprano Bauwien van der Meer and pianist Cecilia Boschman perform a selection of songs, followed by a conversation between Renske and Manon Portos Minetti, scholar in American Studies at Leiden University, specializing in fundamentalist American evangelical right-wing movements.

The 2026 US midterm elections raise fundamental questions about who has constitutional authority over American elections and what role the Supreme Court should play when those rules are contested. Using the midterms as a lens, this mini-lecture by constitutional expert Kim Wehle will examine the Court’s evolving role in elections, the constitutional limits on presidential and state power, and the implications for democratic self-government.

Both American parties are fighting battles of their own. Democrats are torn between progressives and moderates, while Republicans grapple with the forces of Trumpism and traditional conservatism. Who is winning the battle for the soul of each party? In the wake of the midterms, which factions will emerge stronger, and could the fallout reshape the future of American politics?

For years, technology was seen mainly as a story of progress, but it has now become a weapon in the power struggle between China and the US. Chips have become strategic goods, and a handful of tech companies control the infrastructure on which entire societies depend. At the same time, the tide is turning at home: a backlash against technology is taking shape, and the construction of gigantic AI data centers is meeting resistance from Democratic and Republican voters alike. In this mini-lecture, Paul Verhagen, author of The Techtonic Shift, shows how AI is accelerating that shift and calling the power of states themselves into question. Who will set the rules, and what place is left for Europe between America and China?

Sprekers: Annie Jacobsen, Sean Cotter-Lem (moderator)
What happens when an American president faces a decision that could change the course of history? As Washington reportedly weighs using its most powerful non-nuclear bomb against Iran, the stakes of political leadership have rarely felt more immediate. Few people have explored such moments as closely as Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen, who became an international sensation with Nuclear War, reconstructing from interviews with around a hundred insiders how a nuclear conflict could destroy civilisation in just over an hour. In her latest bestseller, Biological War, she turns to a genetically engineered pathogen, made even more dangerous by AI. She joins Midterm Madness to discuss how prepared Washington is, and how much America’s political direction shapes the safety of the world.
